BICYCLE TOUR: EUROTOUR 2010

FLAVIO BASSI'S ON-BOARD DIARY

DAY 3

DATE: 09:07:2010
START: MERANO
FINISH: PRATO ALLO STELVIO
LENGTH: 74 KM
AVERAGE SPPED: 15 KM/H
DIFFICULTY GRADE: A2
One question, several responses
Question:
some cyclists ask to overcome a mountain; there is a provincial road, fairly narrow and quite busy, even by heavy vehicles; space for bike lanes there is none, and there is not even space to throw money by painting strips on the ground with the little drawing of a bicycle.

Response in ordinary Italian regions:
that is the provincial; did you want the bike? Pedal.

Consequence in ordinary Italian regions:
local cyclists go through the provincial for their training; only a handful of international cyclists decide to do bicycle tourism in the area, not accepting the risk of ending the holidays under the wheels of a truck; sometimes a car/bicycle or truck/bicycle accident occurs; the consequences are hospital or morgue for the cyclist, not even a scratch on the motorized driver.

Answer in the Alto Adige region:
we build a new road reserved for cyclists and tailored for them, with hairpin curves, guard rails, signs of attention and of count at the turns (if you had not realized, it's that in photo).

Consequence in the Alto Adige region:
local cyclists go through the new bike road for their training; many international cyclists decide to do bicycle tourism in the area, which allows you to ride safely; car/bicycle or truck/bicycle accidents can not happen; in very rare cases can happen only accidents between bikes or bikes that end up on the floor individually by mistake of the driver; the consequences are almost always nothing more than a few dents; the area has received a new type of tourism and increased its richness.

WHAT RESPONSE IS PREFERABLE?

About the rest, today we roast. The ascent from Merano is challenging, while temperatures do not decrease even at higher altitudes. 35C one more one less. Also we observe that the development of body heat pedaling uphill is much greater than on the flat, so today we gasp.
We decide to terminate the stage before the final 30 km of wall-climb, very hard. We are at Glorenza but prefer to return ten kilometers back to Prato allo Stelvio, where a superb campsite offers a swimming pool with warm water, water games and whirlpool. Ideal to restore ourselves.
