BICYCLE TOUR: EUROTOUR 2008

FLAVIO BASSI'S ON-BOARD DIARY

DAY 26

DATE: 29:08:2008
START: 'S-HERTOGENBOSH
FINISH: AMSTERDAM
LENGTH: 120 KM
DIFFICULTY GRADE: A1
Straight roads.
At the end we understand the situation. The LF Cycle Paths were designed in an office-boat, so that the pen could not go without indecisions. They have the advantage of remaining in the countryside as more as they can; but it is frustrating when you pass more and more time across the same main road, without taking it because the LF signs indicate crazy directions. Besides the LFs are almost never real cycle paths, but they are only low traffic roads. So we understand that if you forget the LF signs and follow the white and red road-signs, with a small bicycle drawed on, you can arrive everywhere in The Netherlands, following perfect straight roads. They are almost always real cycle paths in separate seat, which go parallel to the main roads with traffic. So there are noise and smog. But they are STRAIGHT. However, in some unlucky cases, you are abandoned inside the motorway. There you risk a lot.
Around midday we surpass Utrecht fastly. In the afternoon, arriving near Amsterdam, a tepid sun appears, and we see the shape of the town far on the horizon, together with some eolic plants. I feel that something is finishing. A great day will put an end to a great proof.
Accomodation in a fine hotel, which is also cheap, in one of the most refined district of old Amsterdam. As soon as we are in the room, it is like we passed a difficult examination. I feel all is dismounting around me: we are arrived! On the opposite side of Europe, after 2500 km, one month of cycling... the next two days will be very relaxed, dedicated to memories, walks and photography.
