BICYCLE TOUR: EUROTOUR 2008

FLAVIO BASSI'S ON-BOARD DIARY

DAY 21

DATE: 24:08:2008
START: ASCHAFFENBURG
FINISH: MAINZ
LENGTH: 101 KM
DIFFICULTY GRADE: A1
Aromatic Valley.
Main Valley is really aromatic. While we are cycling, I realize that each town has its own perfume; I thought that probably it could be possible to recognize each single town even with closed eyes. In fact, each chemical plant gives its characteristic aroma to the air.
Arriving near Frankfurt, all changes: now air is like in high mountain. No chemical additives. And people here seem happy; instead, in the last previous urban centers people seemed sick. This makes me remember that Frankfurt is one of the richest towns of Europe.
In the center of Frankfurt, taxi-cabs are very interesting: they are velo-taxi. Driver uses pedals, with assistance of a small electric motor; and two passengers sit behind. We are not in a country of third or fourth world; we are in Frankfurt.

In the afternoon we meet Lucie, a local biker who gives us useful informations about the next locations of our ride, and arrives to Mainz with us. Very gentle! I hope to see her again in a next ride.
Mainz is a picturesque town, intersection between the rivers Main and Rhine. We stop here even if it is only 4 p.m. because of pain in a knee of Matteo. Accomodation in a characteristic central hotel, and finally some hours for photography. Dinner in a good Italian trattoria.
